Tidewater Southern Fare: A Delicious Preview of Jimmy Pearls

Recently, the "Saucy Girls", (refer to The Four From The Four blog), had the pleasure of previewing the menu for Jimmy Pearls. Like most of the great events we have attended during this time of uncertainty in the COVID pandemic, they were committed to adhering to social distancing. Hand sanitizer was available and the staff wore mask for the duration of the tasting.

Jimmy Pearl's cuisine gives you southern food inspired by the Tidewater and Piedmont foodways. For Virginia natives, you'll taste a piece of home in every bite! Established in 2020, the name Jimmy Pearls coined by Chef Daryl Cooper and Chef Oscar Johnson derived from the male blue crab, Jimmy, and the oyster, Pearl.

Now the food, whew, was amazing...scrumptious...pleasing to the eye! Not to mention, the creativity was shown through the creation of the dishes and their innovative names. The chef's prepared nine tasty dishes from their menu. Although the dishes were considered small plates for tasting purposes, we left feeling like we had a full course meal......with doggy bags!

Our first small dish was, Bubba Chucks. If you love hush puppies and corn you'll love these. Bubba Chucks are savory creamed cornmeal batter fried golden brown. Served with sorghum butter and country ham jam, which is DEFINITELY saucy girl approved!

Freako Misto a fried platter of local seafood and seasonal veggies and lemon is served with their jimmy sauce and smoked cocktail sauce. If you are a seafood lover, like ourselves, this is the dish for you! ALL of their sauces are made from scratch! The seafood and veggies change weekly to keep the dish fresh!

Next small dish was, Steam Me Up Scotty. P.E.I mussels steamed in potlikker broth (liquid broth from cooked vegetables and/or meat), topped with greens and piri piri suace...and you can't forget the cornbread for dippin'!

Whether you're a vegetarian or not, the Succa Free Bowl, will have you coming back for more! This bowl is made up of local grains and limas, tomatoes, onions, bell peppers, and charred sweet corn. (Vegetables subject to change based upon availability).

The Sweet Pea, is Jimmy Pearl's version of a falafel sandwich. Warm pita bread, stuffed with crispy field pea fritter, tomato, onion and cucumber salad. What makes this dish so scrumptious is their homemade peanut tahini sauce, YUMMM!

Prior to this tasting, the saucy girls loved a good lobster roll but Jimmy Pearls provided their Crabber Roll that changed the game! Lightly dressed crab salad, picked shallots and celery, on a brioche roll. So moist and tasty every....single....bite!

Now this next dish was the saucy girl's favorite. Uncle Gene's Fish Sandwhich is nothing to play with! You can taste the love put into the dish passed down from the Chef's uncle. This sandwich is made with fried local fish, jimmy sauce, and field pea slaw on a brioche roll. Let's just say we didn't need a doggy bag for this dish.

We all love fries but their side of Seasoned Fries hand cut and tossed in their house seasoning was just what we needed. *Pro tip: dip the fries in their country ham jelly!*. You can thank us later for that exclusive saucy girl recommendation.

Lastly, just when we thought we couldn't eat anymore...we did! Their Jimmy Pearl's handmade Chicken Hot Link topped with chow chow (pickled relish), mustard on a broiche roll was another favorite of the night. It gives you just the right amount of spicy with a little sweet, mhmmmm!
